The Omaha show is a definite for me, and I'll try for the Lincoln show too (although it would mean having to rent a car for the weekend!). :)

9:58 am - Everything Is an Afterthought

chidder
I recently sold my first book. In conjunction, I've established another LiveJournal to report on the project's progress, occasionally provide links about, and writings by, its subject, Paul Nelson (famous for signing the New York Dolls to their first label, trying to sign the Modern Lovers, and for his Rolling Stone cover story about Warren Zevon's battle with alcoholism), and share snippets of information or parts of interviews that may or may not be covered further in the final product.

The new journal shares the book's working title, Everything Is an Afterthought: The Life and Writings of Paul Nelson. Just follow the link.

Anybody interested in learning more about this brilliant critic, whose own life proved just as mysterious and fascinating as the artists' about whom he wrote, is welcome to join. As well, tracking the process of how a book goes from sale to publication should prove interesting. I'm rather curious about that part myself...

Hi! I just got a copy of It's Time For by JR. It's pretty hard to get, so if anyone wants me to burn a copy (I don't really feel guilty about this because it's out of print, and I just paid a shitload of money to a used CD store for it), comment with your address or email me at lnorment at gmail dot com. I also have rockin' and romance and Jonathan sings, both out of print...

Nobody's posted here in a long time, so I thought I'd put in this little story I found somewhere awhile ago and saved.

"Let me say right here that I don't share Jonathan's
warm feelings toward little insects (or big ones
either). We were having problems with some flying
ones, and I'd put up a pest strip, this sticky thing
that hung from the ceiling and that the bugs were
supposed to fly into and get stuck.
Jonathan was having none of this.
He picked up the pest strip and carried it downstairs,
all the while making up a little song
about how he was going to get rid of nerve gas
(my memory tells me that he was playing his guitar
while he was doing this, but perhaps my subconscious
is just over-elaborating).
After disposing of it, he walked back upstairs
singing about how he had just gotten rid of nerve gas.
I was too dumbstruck to say a damn thing."

I have little idea where that came from, but it makes me smile.

Hello!

I lent my copy of "Jonathan Sings" to a friend awhile ago. She has yet to give it back, and now that she is in Pittsburgh and I in Portland, my capacity for bothering her to give it back is drastically reduced.

Anyway, while I am biding my time while waiting to get it back, could anybody here hook me up with an mp3 of "When I'm Walking"? I need it for a traveling-themed CD I am making for my father.

1:31 am - Jonathan in Baltimore last night

koav
I saw Jonathan last night at the 8 X 10 club in Baltimore, did anyone else here go? Does anyone here live in the area?

It was my 3rd time seeing him perform and was as always a great show. His voice sounded a bit rough, but he admitted half way through he was fighting laringitus. Despite that, he was his jovial fun wonderful self on stage and gave a very good performance. Sorry no pics or anything.

Is there a Jonathan Richman website anywhere that indicates where and when he's playing? I'm in the UK, and he comes over occasionally but it would be good to know when he may next be over.

4:38 am - Jonathan live in Springfield, MO

I got to see Jonathan live for the first time, last Friday. Here's a link to my journal with some pictures from the show: http://www.livejournal.com/users/promootheus/130764.html

My camera sucks in low light, so there aren't any really great shots, but it does prove I was there.

7:29 pm - Last week's performance at TCAN.
roargh Hi, I'm Natalia, but you can call me Talia or Tal. I live in Natick, Massachusetts, which some of you may know, is Jonathan's hometown. I just went to a Jonathan Richman concert last week, and I thought I might share some pictures.

I don't know if anyone else here lives in the midwest. Regardless, Jonathan Richman is playing in Springfield, MO @ the Outland, June 24th. My roommate and I will definitely be attending. If you're within a day's drive, I'm assuming it will be totally worth the trip.

btw - Hi, I'm new here.

Hi there.  My name is Elizabeth, and I'm new here.  I'm a big fan of Jonathan Richman and love all of his work.  I saw him play  in New Orleans in the summer of 2004.  It was amazing.  I even got in a carwreck on the way to the show, and it was totally worth it.  I have some pictures from that particular show (it was at One Eyed Jack's).  Enjoy!

7:40 pm - Let her go into the darkness

lindyrenee
Johnathan Richman recorded a song on the Cohen OBrian show called "Let her go into the darkness". I am wondering what ideas you may have on what Laundry mat means in the song. Is it that he is obsessed with visions of her sex stained sheets or is it that he is trying to let her go and so the laundry mat becomes a symbol of this. Or does anyone have any other ideas? Its a hot topic here in real life and i am calling for some help :)

Please!

hi. i went to a jonathan richman show in rome two years ago. this is my story:

there were VERY few people there, like maybe 4 or 5 young people, some adult khaki wearing tourists ("have you ever heard of this guy? No, i just wanted to hear some live music"), and a few quirky adults that seemed like real fans, such as this wonderful blond chemist-type dude who was dancing around spasticly near the bar and stuff. i say most of the adults in the audience were tourists because, besides hearing them say amongst themselves during the performance that they'd never heard of "this guy", there was a group of loud american students i had to get by to get in to the bar initially. they said the ticket agent was charging double the price for admission and they were mad. they said they only knew about the show because they wanted to see some live music (also) and didnt even know who JR was. i was ready to YELL at the ticket guy (and even haggle) but when i asked him the price he told me the correct price and let me right in. so maybe 8-10 at the show actually knew who JR was. 15-20 people in all besides those drinking obliviously at the bar.

He sang directly to me once i sat down which was amazing but honestly made me a little uncomfortable and sad, as his songs can be sad. The first one he directed at me was "summer feeling", which actually hurt me a bit instead of flattering me since it was like he was telling me (im 23). The other was the one about the beauty of a girl who is natural and only cloaked by the night. I am a pretty natural girl, so that was sweet and i was sure jonathan richman was in love with me.

After he played he came out and spoke to some people and the tourists were video taping him and stuff. He seemed to really like them and I'm not sure if he knew that they werent fans or if he cared (maybe they became new fans). When i finally spoke to him I mentioned that a group of my friends couldnt make it and I asked for some "words of wisdom" to give to them. He sorta made fun of me to the tourists, like "i dont know, what could i say?" and i felt pretty bad. but whatever. I mean, a second after i said it I realized that his whole set contained anything he could ever say to them. An italian boy was standing behind me and asked me for my email address because he could hear i was american and wanted to hang out. and we ended up seeing each other... so, i found love at a Jonathon Richman show, which is the moral of the story. (although it was pretty ill-fated, honestly)

8:02 pm - give paris one more chance

koav
I just joined this community. I love Jonathan, his music means a lot to me. I have a question which may seem dumb. I wish I would have asked Jonathan personally this past summer when I saw him live, but maybe next time. Does anyone know the three artists he mentions in his song "Give Paris One More Chance?" I assume one is writer Tracey Chevalier, but I'm not sure the other two. Being such a fan of JR's music, I'm interested in who he is interested in and influenced by. Thanks.
